Paris is a city full of unexpected treasures. Around every corner, down a narrow street, or tucked away in a quiet square, you’ll often stumble upon something whimsical, mysterious, or surprising. One of these hidden gems can be found in the Montmartre neighborhood — Le Passe-Muraille or The Walker-Through-Walls.

This unusual statue in Place Marcel Aymé depicts a man halfway trapped in a wall, as if caught mid-step while passing through solid stone. It’s quirky, a little haunting, and full of Parisian charm. But this sculpture isn’t just a piece of street art — it carries a fascinating story with it.

The Story Behind the Statue

The square where the statue stands is named after writer Marcel Aymé, who lived nearby on rue Junot. The statue itself is a tribute to both the author and his famous short story Le Passe-Muraille (literally “The Man Who Walked Through Walls”), first published in 1941.
In the tale, a modest man suddenly discovers he has an extraordinary gift — he can walk through walls. At first, he uses this strange power to get back at colleagues who humiliated him at work. Later, he takes to burglary, effortlessly slipping in and out of locked buildings, even escaping from prison with ease.

But things take a romantic turn when he falls in love with a woman trapped in an unhappy marriage. Using his gift, he secretly visits her, until one night tragedy strikes. As he leaves her home, his power suddenly fails — and he becomes stuck forever inside the stone wall.

From Story to Sculpture

In 1989, French sculptor and actor Jean Marais — a close friend of many artists and writers of his time — brought this story to life in bronze. The statue portrays the writer Marcel Aymé himself as the doomed “walker-through-walls,” forever frozen in Montmartre.
It’s a whimsical, surreal tribute that delights passersby, often sparking curiosity and laughter. Some visitors stop to take photos pretending to help pull him out of the wall, while others simply marvel at the clever way literature, history, and art blend right into the streets of Paris.

Visiting Le Passe-Muraille

You’ll find the statue in Place Marcel Aymé, tucked away in Montmartre. It’s not far from other neighborhood highlights like the Sacré-Cœur Basilica or the charming streets filled with cafés and artists’ studios.

If you love discovering Paris beyond the famous landmarks, Le Passe-Muraille is the perfect stop. It captures the playful, imaginative spirit of the city and reminds us that Paris is as much about its stories as it is about its monuments.
