International Women’s Day: Celebrating Women Who Choose Courage, Change, and a Life They Love

3/8/2026

Every year on March 8, the world celebrates International Women’s Day—a day dedicated to honoring women’s achievements, recognizing the progress we’ve made, and acknowledging the work that still lies ahead.

But beyond the history, the hashtags, and the inspirational quotes, International Women’s Day is really about something deeper:
It’s about women who choose to show up for their own lives.
Women who choose courage when it would be easier to stay comfortable.
Women who choose change when it would be simpler to stay stuck.
Women who choose to dream—even when the world tells them they’re too old, too late, or too unrealistic.

The Women Who Came Before Us

International Women’s Day exists because women fought—often quietly, and often at great personal cost—for rights and freedoms we sometimes take for granted today.
The ability to vote.
To work.
To own property.
To open bank accounts.
To get an education.
To leave unhealthy relationships.
To make choices about our own bodies and futures.

Many of those freedoms weren’t given easily. They were earned through persistence, bravery, and generations of women refusing to accept “no” as the final answer.

We honor them not only by remembering them—but by living fully in the opportunities they helped create.

Modern Women Are Still Breaking Barriers — Just in Different Ways

Not every battle looks like a protest march.

Sometimes the most powerful kind of courage looks like:
  • leaving a job that drains you
  • starting over after divorce
  • going back to school at 50 or 60
  • setting boundaries with family
  • taking control of your finances
  • traveling solo for the first time
  • moving to a new country
  • choosing peace over approval

Today, women are redefining success.

Success doesn’t always mean climbing corporate ladders or having the perfect home. For many women, success now means something far more meaningful: freedom. Freedom to design a life that feels aligned, joyful, and authentic.

Why International Women’s Day Matters to Women Living Abroad

As someone who moved abroad and started a new chapter in Portugal, I can say firsthand: living in another country can be both exhilarating and humbling.
There is something incredibly empowering about navigating a new culture, learning a new system, and realizing that you’re capable of more than you ever thought.
For women, moving abroad is often about more than travel or retirement—it’s about reclaiming identity.
It’s about asking:
  • What do I really want?
  • Who am I when I’m not living according to everyone else’s expectations?
  • What kind of life feels peaceful to me?
  • What does freedom look like at this stage of life?
And the answer is different for every woman.
For some, it’s a small village and a quiet home.
For others, it’s a big city and constant adventure.
For some, it’s rebuilding after hardship.
For others, it’s finally allowing themselves to rest.
But no matter what the dream looks like, choosing it is powerful.

How to Celebrate International Women’s Day

You don’t need a big event to celebrate this day.

Here are a few simple but powerful ways to honor International Women’s Day:

1. Support a woman-owned business. Buy something small, leave a review, share their work.

2. Reach out to a woman who inspires you. Send a message. Tell her what her strength means to you.

3. Reflect on how far you’ve come. Even if your journey has been messy, you are still here—and that matters.

4. Make a promise to yourself. Not a huge one. Just something real. More rest. More boundaries. More joy. More courage.

5. Celebrate yourself. Yes, you. Your story deserves recognition too.
Happy International Women’s Day, from Living Linda 🌍✨
