New Foods I Ate in 2024

I love trying new foods, especially when I travel.  At the end of each year, I try to do a blog post detailing what I ate and where. This is that post. I hope you enjoy it.

Shark fin soup is a traditional Chinese dish that is considered a delicacy. ​

Bolo de Mel

​Bolo de mel is the oldest Madeiran cake dating from the 15th century. ​The cake often has walnuts and almonds mixed within it. Clove, cinnamon, black pepper, anise seeds and allspice are popular spices used in the preparation. 

​This one is actually gluten free, so I could eat it. And it is so good.

Passion Kiwi

Tastes like a golden kiwi fruit (my fav) but with a distinctive red flesh inside, visually resembling the appearance of a passion fruit.

Madeira Island, Portugal

Black scabbardfish with Banana and Maracujá (passion fruit) sauce 

​Black scabbardfish is a very common delicacy in the Madeira archipelago. It lives in the Atlantic Ocean at depths ranging between 200 and 1700 meters. In Madeira, one of the main places where it is very common for fishermen to dedicate themselves to their catch is in Câmara de Lobos.

Monstera Deliciosa

This exotic fruit tastes like banana (texture wise) and pineapple (taste). I did a blog post about this fruit because it can also be a bit dangerous if not eaten properly.

Red Flesh Dragon fruit

This one was a bit sweeter than the white fleshed dragon fruit, but not really that much.

Yellow Skinned Dragon fruit

The yellow skinned Dragonfruit also has white flesh but it is the sweetest and most flavorful, in my opinion.

Venice, Italy

Black Ink Squid Pasta

A friend recommended I try this Italian coastal recipe while I was visiting Venice in July.  It was so good, I had it twice.

Even more fun, it turns your mouth and teeth black ... but not permanently.  It disappears pretty quickly once you drink water or brush your teeth.
