Gluten Free Colonial Williamsburg
Exploring Colonial Williamsburg
This town is full of life as well as history. If you’re into history like my husband is (I’m slowly coming around), you have to take a trip to Williamsburg, Virginia. If you aren’t into history? You have to go to Colonial Williamsburg because you will end up loving it — both history and Williamsburg.

Picture a living museum where interpreters are dressed in magnificent period costumes to give you a peek into the daily life of Williamsburg colonists as you tour restored historic buildings, beautiful gardens, and trade shops.
Every little detail has been seen to. If I had to choose a few must-see places within Colonial Williamsburg, I would recommend taking the time to see the Governor’s Palace and gardens. The tour lasts about 35 minutes. The original palace, home to seven Virginia governors including Thomas Jefferson, was destroyed by fire but thanks to the Rockefeller family was rebuilt and decorated to the nines with lavish carpets and tapestries, beautiful antique furniture, chandeliers, and paintings.
Other must-sees on my list: the vegetable gardens (I had an herb garden this summer, I just may be inspired to do a vegetable garden next summer), the print shop and the courthouse where you can witness justice being served. I took hundreds of pictures.
In Williamsburg, there’s something for everyone. The whole family will enjoy the many activities, programs, classes, and tours available each day. You can learn about Folk Art, see how cloth was dyed, how a printing press was operated, and much, much more. You can even be silly and pretend your are being punished by public humiliation in this pillory.
Gluten Free Dining Guide
I am also happy to report that I found quite a few gluten free/celiac friendly options on our wanderings around historic sites and museums in the sunshine.
The Cheese Shop had gluten free food and speciality foods. Check out their gluten free bagels with either ham or chicken breast. Add one of the specialty cheeses to make a tasty sandwich.
If you like Mexican, Plaza Azteca and El Tolteca are great places to find gluten-free options because so many of their options use corn tortillas and the melted cheese is safe.
Love hamburgers and fries? Five Guys uses a dedicated potato fryer so their fries are safe for an indulgent snack. You’ll have to order your hamburger without the bun, unless you think ahead and bring one of your own.
Carraba’s, Outback and Bonefish Grill have a range of gluten free options and their staff are well acquainted with accommodating those with gluten sensitivities or celiac.
More of a pizza fan? UNO Chicago Grill offers gluten free pizza. If you want a truly sinful pizza experience, you must try the gluten free pizza at Z-Pizza in New Town. My favorite is the Mexican – spicy lime chicken, salsa, mozzarella, green onions, red onions, fresh avocado, sour cream, and cilantro. Yum!

Food for Thought has quite an extensive gluten free menu (for both Lunch/Dinner as well as Breakfast). I had read about this restaurant on another website and was excited to try it. So after we finished our day in Virginia Beach, we headed back to Williamsburg. My husband had Pot Roast which he thoroughly enjoyed. I had Cilantro Lime Chicken, Grilled Zucchini and Mashed Potatoes. Yummy! They even had a gluten free roll for me. Do you know how long it has been since I’ve had a dinner roll?
When we were checking out, our waiter told us about breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays and that they even had gluten free French Toast that was excellent. With that, we decided to come back before we left. We actually ended up going back the next morning where I had, you guessed it, gluten free French Toast.
It was absolutely delicious! I asked the owner if they made the bread on-site and he said that they get it from a place called annieB’s gluten free in Richmond. He said that they even ship right to your door. I definitely am going to be ordering from them soon.
