That night for dinner, Gary cooked one of the camp meals that he brought from home – Beef Stew. I took one bite and spit it out.
“Oh my God, that is terrible,” I said.
Gary thinks that I am just trying to get out of eating it so we can go out to dinner again. He sees the look for disgust on my face, but decides to try a bite anyway – although I notice that it is a considerably smaller bite than I took.
In less than 2 seconds, he has spit it out too.
“How old is this Beef Stew?” I ask.
“Probably about 15 years old,” he says.
“Ah, are you trying to kill us?”
“It is freeze dried. It should still be good,” he says.
“Everything has a expiration date. Let’s go to Salmon Bake for dinner.”
The Salmon Bake is hard to miss. It is located right in the middle of ‘Glitter Gulch’ outside of Denali National Park.
Once inside, the atmosphere is pure roadhouse with license plates and other memorabilia all over the walls, but don’t let the surly-looking, tattooed staff scare you – they were all wonderful and friendly.
I had the salmon bake. It had a slightly sweet glaze that was just awesome.
This restaurant is quickly becoming our favorite in Denali.
