Black & White Hot Chocolate
Yields 2-3 servings

Ingredients:
For the Hot Chocolate:
  • 2 cups whole milk (or your favorite plant milk)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips (70% cocoa)
  • 1/2 cup white chocolate chips
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar or Monkfruit sweetener (optional, for extra sweetness)
Picture
For the Toppings:
  • 1 cup marshmallows
  • 1/4 cup shredded coconut
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Caramel topping (optional)
  • Dark chocolate shavings (optional)
Directions:

Toast the Coconut:
Preheat a small skillet over medium heat.
Add the shredded coconut and toast for 2–3 minutes, stirring frequently, until golden brown. Set aside to cool.

Make the Hot Chocolate Base:
In a medium saucepan, combine milk and heavy cream over medium heat. Stir occasionally until it begins to steam, but do not let it boil.

Reduce heat to low and whisk in the dark chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, and vanilla extract. Continue whisking until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is smooth. Taste and add sugar if desired.

Prepare the Toppings:
In each serving mug, add a handful of marshmallows.

Assemble the Hot Chocolate:
Pour the hot chocolate into the mugs over the marshmallows. Top with a dollop of whipped cream (if using). Sprinkle the toasted coconut, caramel topping and dark chocolate shavings on top for a festive finish.

Serve and Enjoy:
Serve immediately with a spoon for scooping the melted marshmallows and toppings. Pair with your favorite cookies or biscotti for an extra indulgence!

Tips:
  • For an extra coconut kick, use coconut milk instead of regular milk.
  • Add a splash of coconut rum for an adult version.
  • Use dairy-free milk and chocolate for a vegan-friendly option.

Sipping Hot Chocolate at Landeau Chocolate

Smooth, rich and creamy ― everything you could want in a cup of hot chocolate on a rainy day in Lisbon.
Picture
I'm here in Lisbon on my mission to find an apartment for my D7 application and my move to Lisbon hopefully in the next few months.  It's March and it's cold and rainy which means hot chocolate is a necessity.  It's my favorite winter hot drink.

My friend told me about Landeau Chocolate when she and her family were visiting Lisbon in December 2021.  I kept it in my mental databank for future reference.

I looked it up to find that there are three locations in LX Factory, Chiado and El Corte Ingles.  The one in Chiado is located at  Rua das Flores, 70.  That's not far from where I'm staying so I put the address in Google maps and set off.

They also serve chocolate cake which the New York Times called "devilishly good".  I didn't want to be up all night with that much caffeine that I just opted for hot chocolate.  I'll have to return at some point when I'm living there and give it a try.

Hot Chocolate from Heaven

If a cup of hot chocolate fell from the sky, this would certainly be a strong candidate.
Picture
I'm staying in Coimbra, Portugal for 10 days in a cute AirBnB, researching a potential move to Portugal in early 2022.

As I was walking to the city centre from my rental, I noticed a chocolate shop called Chocolataria Equador. A lover of chocolate, my interested was immediately piqued.

It was closed the first time I passed by.  But since it is on the side street on the way to my AirBnB it was easy to visit.
Picture
New York's digital magazine "Prior" describes Chocolataria Ecuador as one of the best in the world in a list of eleven chocolate shops.
They offer truffles, bonbons, and chocolate bars. These make great gifts to bring home for family and friends.
And most importantly (at least in this instant) hot chocolate.
Picture
It's thick and rich and they serve it with chocolate sticks and chocolate dusting because who doesn't need more chocolate.

It comes in two sizes.  Of course, I opted for the larger size.  I definitely had a chocolate buzz after finishing.
Later, I learned that they also have locations in Lisbon and Porto.
