Hysterectomy? Or No?

6/30/2014

On June 27, I met with my doctor to discuss my proposed total hysterectomy (uterus, ovaries and cervix).  He also wants to do a bladder lift at the same time because he said that your bladder tends to prolapse (and I already have some of that going on now) after a hysterectomy and you will need to have that surgery within 1-2 years.

I’m terrified.

A recent ultrasound revealed that I cysts on each ovary and several fibroids. I guess it’s a hot mess up in there.

Since March 2012, I’ve been experiencing heavy periods with bouts of bleeding for weeks at a time and often more than one a month.  But… this isn’t the half of it.

Right before every cycle I have the added bonus of looking, and feeling, like Quasimodo after a night of too much revelry. It’s wholly perplexing to me, but right around that “time of the month” I will find myself with severe breast tenderness and a migraine like no other complete with nausea.  This lasts anywhere from 12 to 48 hours.   I’m not stranger to migraines, I’m one of the not-so-lucky ones that have experienced them since I was 19.  But these migraines are different.  The pain is excruciating.

I had already looked into ablation when we lived in Virginia,  but as I consulted my best friend Google for case studies I found that endometrial ablation was often a failure. Yeah, I don’t think so.

Gary and I talked about it.  I think he is just a scared as I am, but he’s on board. For the most part, I’m on board. At times, I actually feel excited to be done with the whole period thing.  I can’t wait to wear white pants and not have to worry about embarrassing myself and also to buy new underwear.

Other times, I spend too much time Googling and end up terrified.  Many women are worse off than they were before.  The dreadful reviews go on and on.  And on…

I’m honestly so torn and I have so so so many questions:
Will my vagina dry up and wither away?
Will I still want to have sex with my dear hubby?
Will I gain weight ... even more weight than I’ve already gained (On December 23, 2012 I finally got down to 140 pounds and maintained it pretty steadily until early 2014 when my weight became the worst roller coaster ride reaching the heights of 163.  I’m currently at 155 which on a 5’2” frame doesn’t look or feel very nice, in my opinion.)

Dear readers, if you’ve had a hysterectomy (or know of someone who has) will you please share your stories with me – the good, the bad and the ugly?  I’d really love to hear from you as I tap in to make this decision. And if you have any experience with any of my questions, please let me know that too. I’d be most appreciative.
