Brighton's Quirky Seafront Sculpture

8/10/2023

I just returned from a week's vacation in Brighton England with two day trips to London to visit Kew Gardens among other sights.  I can't wait to share more post with you about what I saw and did.  But in the meantime, let me tell you about this "quirky" sculpture sitting prominently on Brighton's seafront.
Picture
Anyone walking along the Brighton seafront for the first time might do a double take and ask themselves “Why is this massive metal doughnut here?”

In 1998, the Brighton council commissioned sculptor Hamish Black to create this 2.2 ton masterpiece. His creation, officially is called “Afloat”, is supposed to resemble what the universe looks like. Some scientists think that the Universe looks like a big doughnut.

It may or may not look like the Universe, but it’s a great place to take selfies and has a perfect view of the Brighton Pier.  Don’t you agree?
